Summer Phonics Challenge 2020
We have decided to relaunch our phonics competition over the summer to help keep your phonic skills razor sharp. Every Monday a new video will be launched challenging you to try a phonics game at home. All you have to do is take a photo of you playing the games and bring them in with you when you return to school. A winner will be announced at the end of September and you could win a voucher to spend on toys!
The games will work for any of the phases and there are lots of ideas, sounds and words for each phase on our Phonics, Reading and Writing Page. Below the video is a quick reminder of the phases children work within during their year group.
EYFS- children aim to secure all the sounds within phase 2 and 3 by the end of Foundation Stage. Use the handy sound mats below to see how many your child can remember then focus on the ones they haven’t secured yet. Some children may be ready to explore phase 4.
Year 1- children aim to be able to read more complex blends at the start of words during phase 4 and will secure all the sounds in phase 5. They may also go on to learn lots of new and alternative ways of reading the sounds they know. Use the handy sound mats below to see how many they can remember.
Year 2- children will continue to work through alternative sounds and learn spelling rules. Revisiting the sounds in all the phases prevents new gaps from opening up. Use the handy sound mats below to see how well they know the sounds in each phase.
Looking for a challenge? - writing the sounds takes longer to secure, so lots of opportunities to try writing digraphs (two letters that make one sound) in words and building up to sentences will help.
