The Good Grub Club

What is The Good Grub Club?

The Good Grub Club is a programme of activities and events developed by Parsons Down to support, educate and empower pupils and families around the many benefits of growing food and cooking together.

Cooking with children offers substantial social and emotional benefits by enhancing self-esteem through accomplishments, fostering patience and focus as they follow steps, and boosting independence with age-appropriate tasks. It builds strong family bonds and communication skills through teamwork, and nurtures creativity, a positive attitude toward food, and essential life skills for future independence.

What activities can pupils and families engage with?

Working together with West Berks Foodbank, pupils have the opportunity to cook easy, budget friendly meals at school. They are then provided with the ingredients required to re-create those recipes at home, creating the chance to cook together.
Pupils have enjoyed cooking recipes such as meatballs and pasta, mixed bean chilli, beef lasagne and a delicious chocolate mug cake!
Families are also invited to collect ingredients, sometimes grown around the school grounds, and cook simple recipes at home. Some of the easiest recipes to have a go at use the herbs grown in The Pod Planters.

Together, we cook.

What is the West Berks Foodbank?

The West Berks Foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

It can provide seven days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. Working together, our aim is to educate and empower families around the benefits of cooking together. We are proud to support the Foodbank with our annual harvest collection and additional fundraising events.
