An Impressive Year of Eco-Schools Actions!

This year, our Eco-Committee selected Healthy Living, Marine and School Grounds as their Eco-Schools topics and we have had a truly action-packed year!

Healthy Living

• We launched the Good Grub Club, providing pupils with the skills to cook a healthy meal.

• We grew and harvested healthy snacks in the Pod planters.

• We had an assembly on healthy eating, including vegan diets, seasonal eating and whole foods.

• We are in the process of putting together some PDP recipe cards, which will include healthy meals from parents and school staff.

Marine

• Upper School pupils litter picked on the way back from their swimming lesson.

• We continued with our regular lunchtime litter picking.

• We had an assembly on plastic free lunches.

• We promoted Plastic Free July.

• Our PDP recipe cards will feature plastic free snack recipes.

School Grounds

• We planted 5 fruit trees in the meadow and measured how much they have grown in height. The apple trees have grown the most, especially the Cox apple which has shot up by 39cm!

• We planted bulbs and sowed wildflower seeds on the roundabout. The flowers have provided nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators.

• We planted herbs, fruit and vegetables in our new planters outside the Pod. This has been a great success.

• We took part in No Mow May, leaving the grass on the roundabout and at the back of the field to grow long. We have also kept off the meadow to allow the wildflowers to come back. This area is looking lovely at the moment and we have seen insects such as grasshoppers and damselflies enjoying the space.

Our Other Eco Actions

• We collected donations for the Food Bank which weighed in at 106.8kgs. This is roughly equal to 224 meals for people in need.

• We promoted Cut Your Carbon. 12 pupils and their families took part, resulting in 143.71 kg of carbon savings. This is roughly equal to powering a UK home's electricity for 1 to 2 months. If everyone took part next year, just think of the amount of carbon we could save!

• We had an assembly about how to have an environmentally friendly Christmas and the Eco-Committee made eco Christmas crackers using leftover wrapping paper.
